Only Amnesty International could come up with a ludicrous report that compares the detention center at Guantánamo Bay to a Soviet-era gulag. And George W. Bush had some appropriate words about that report:

It's an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world," Bush said of the Amnesty International report that compared Guantanamo to a Soviet-era gulag.

In a Rose Garden news conference, Bush defiantly stood by his domestic policy agenda while defending his actions abroad. He repeatedly pledged to press ahead — "The president has got to push, he's got to keep leading" — despite mounting criticism.

Was there systematic, deliberate, and massive starvation of detainees at Guantánamo? Torture and rape? Indiscriminate mass killing, with the creation of mass graves? Absolutely not, and this illustrates the outrageousness of the comparison by Amnesty International.

The people at Amnesty International should go read this before they start making absurd and unsupportable claims that compare to Guantánamo Bay.
