Some are arguing that Republican leaders in the House are politically unwise to make such an issue of the FBI's weekend raid of Rep. William Jefferson's Capitol Hill office, thereby diverting public attention from the Democratic congressman's troubles.
My view is that the raid was an outrageous breach of the Founder's view of the Seperation of Powers, and that Republican leaders standing in protest alongside Democrats are right on target.
Jefferson's alleged troubles have already diluted the ability of Democrats to attack Republicans for their "culture of corruption" as we approach the November elections, and a Republican protest against the bizarre FBI raid of Jefferson's office is not going to alter that. An investigation is immediately warranted to find out precisely on what grounds the FBI made the move, exactly what was removed, and who authorized the raid.
The Justice Department made a bad move, and I hope that this issue does indeed make it all the way to the Supreme Court for clarification.
