Chris Matthews thinks that Joe Lieberman is further to the right than the President. Yes, he actually said it to Don Imus. This regardless of the reality that Lieberman has been a loyal Democratic soldier, in terms of his Senate voting record, on almost every issue except the Iraq war. But because of that single issue, Matthews believes that Lieberman should be shown the door.

Here is a part (via Radioblogger) of the exchange:

Matthews: "Look, he's where he stands. He's further right than the President, probably. Look, you know, I think you have to look at it this way. You or I, everybody in the United States lives in either a blue state or a red state, so our votes, individually, don't really matter. I mean, I've been living in Maryland...I mean, my vote, it's always going to be Democratic. If you live in Virginia, it's almost always going to be Republican. And basically, our votes really don't count. We're also gerrymandered to death, that people like Wexler don't ever face opponents. So your vote for Congress doesn't matter anymore, because you've been gerrymandered into a red or a blue Congressional seat. And this is true in the big cities, black Congressmen are Democrats. It's just...everything is gerrymandered by geography. This is one of the few times you actually can go to a voting booth and vote for or against the war. I think people should have a right, and they should all vote, and it'll probably help Lieberman. But I think everybody should vote and say wait a minute, this is the rare chance I get to say whether we should have gone into Iraq or not, whether we should be following these policies. And I disagree with you. I think this is a chance to vote on the policy, and it's rare in this country anymore, where your vote really counts."

To which Imus could only sit back, not believing what he was hearing, and respond:

"That is really just an...that is just an absurd, ridiculous position. I'm just...I'm almost embarrassed that you've said that."

A further Matthews meltdown:

"...the Vice President, you notice how he hides during difficult times? He's in his bunker, he's in an undisclosed location. Where's Cheney in all this? He just fades every time something happens."

It's called protecting the line of presidential succession, Chris. You really should read up on it once in awhile.
