Not so fast. You see, the Constitution says that a member of Congress can't be arrested travelling to a session of Congress.

I'm not seeing how this works for Craig. He didn't even tell the governor of Idaho, or other Republican supporters in the state, of his intention to try and stay in office were he to clear himself of the charges. This will anger them greatly, and they are not likely to support him in his efforts. He will need their support to stay in office. Senate colleagues are likely to be more enraged, especially since Craig never bothered to reveal the original arrest and guilty plea to the Republican leadership, thereby exposing the party to surprise embarassment, which it had a difficult time initially responding to. This was selfish of Craig, and his reconsideration of his resignation is just as selfish and damaging to his state and party.

Were Craig to stay in the Senate using this method then he would most certainly be ostracized and ineffective. His state would suffer, and he would make the national Republican party a target everywhere of Democrats during a critical election year. This is the political reality, regardless of how Craig thinks he has been treated. And Craig is not being railroaded. Craig is the one that made the guilty plea, and he had no interest in attempting to reverse that plea until details of the incident and plea became public, threatening his power in the Senate.

If Larry Craig harbors the best interests of both his state and the Republican party then he will step down as planned on Sept. 30th.
