It's unfortunate, as he really was the most authentic conservative running for the Republican nomination. But Thompson came in too late, and he never showed - until recent weeks - the fire in his belly that would assure doubtful Republicans that he really, really wanted the job. For some that was refreshing, but not for the majority involved in the nominating process. Had Thompson entered the race earlier he would have had the time to hone his act, as the other candidates did. But good luck to Fred Thompson. I'm sure he'll have no shortage of offers to return to either Hollywood and/or the practice of law.
