Boxer Will Join Others To Challenge Electoral Certification

So Sen. Barbara Boxer did not waffle. She will join the effort to delay certification of the electoral votes that guarantee George W. Bush's reelection as president. The action has not been attempted in 36 years and it does not threaten Bush's reelection. However, it will force members to retire for two hours to "debate" certification.

The Democrats claim that the action is directed at focusing attention on "voting irregularities" in the state of Ohio. The real purpose, of course, is to create as much of a potential doubt about the president's victory as possible. Any doubt amongst their own ranks already exists, and therefore the Democrats accomplish no net gain with this action.

The Democrats will manage one accomplishment: making a spectacle of themselves. When they realize that, they will inevitably blame the whole thing on Karl Rove. "Karl Rove manipulated us into this...he rope-a-doped us." No, it is not a Rovian plot, but he must be very pleased to sit back and watch the Democrats once again walk off the plank. He couldn't in his wildest dreams imagine being handed a gift such as this. To Karl Rove, the Democrats are the gift that keeps on giving.

New Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is said to be furious with this whole matter, privately urging Boxer and others not to cause a delay. There is no doubt about Reid's partisanship, but he knows what kind of damage this will do the party. Reid's goal is to help get the Democrats back into majority status, and he knows that this action is going to do nothing to help accomplish that.

Oh, and I just watched Barbara Boxer on CSPAN. Wow. She obviously does not believe a word she is uttering as she rattles off the DNC talking points. I thought my two senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, were pathetic. You people down in California have to put up with Boxer? Yikes!

UPDATE: Indeed!

As much as I would have liked to have seen Kerry win, this is absolutely ridiculous. Bush did not win by a Washington state margin.

Bush ran a good campaign. Kerry didn't. Bush won. Kerry lost.

Just what is so difficult to understand about that?
