<p>As well as the hundreds of guitar bands and singer songwriters out there in the music world, there is always those who choose to go down the road less travelled. Steel is used by some experimental and industrial musicians in bands and ensembles around the world.<br />
<span id="more-86"></span>There is also a tradition of steel bands that originates from Trinidad and Tobago, based around steelpans or steeldrums. It is interesting to note the links between industrialisation and the effect that it has had on the music world.</p>
<p>Steel bands that play steel drums are the most well known examples of the use of steel in music. A steel drum or pan is a pitched percussion instrument that is made from 55 gallon drums and is tuned chromatically. This type of drum falls into the idiophone family of instruments, and is not technically regarded as a drum as it is not a membranophone. While a pan may be a more technically accurate description of these instruments, all around the world they are referred to as steel drums. The steel drum or pan came out of Trinidad and is one of the most well known examples of Caribbean Music. Steelbands can be heard all over the caribbean and are also popular at Weddings and as entertainment during marches and festivals.</p>
<p>The other main use of steel in music lies on the fringes of contemporary music practices. In the 1970s a number of experimental and industrial bands began to use different instruments as a means to broaden their sound. Steel plates and industrial parts were used as percussion instruments by industrial bands such as Einsturzende Neubauten in the 1980s. This use of industrial parts such as Loose Flange (<a href="http://www.rofi.de/Flansche-3c.html" target="_blank">Lose-Flansche</a>) components and power tools gave the band a unique and raucous sound that had never been heard before. Steel plates had been used for years as a reverberation device, creating the famous plate reverb that is still modelled in many digital instruments today.</p>
<p>While a traditional Carabbean steel band and an experimental industrial act may seem to have very little in common, the very use of steel in their productions does tie them together in some way. The 55 gallon drum was used to make steelpans from about 1947, as these drums were readily available left overs from the cheap production and industrialisation of steel. In a similar way, industrial bands used left over and recycled steel as instruments as well. When a process such as steel manufacture becomes an inexpensive way to drive industry and infrastructure, there will always be left overs. As a creative person, it makes sense to go down to your local steel shop – <a href="http://www.rofi.de/" target="_blank">ROFI</a>, and turn an inexpensive steel component into a part of a new musical tradition.</p>

All of the digital devices that we rely on every day, such as computers and mobile phones, are reliant on integrated circuits in order to function.  There are a number of production methods used in the fabrication of computer chips, with <a href="http://www.fotofab.com/cmp_etching.php" target="_blank">photo chemical etching</a> playing an important role in some components.  A number of materials have been studied with regard to chip manufacture since the 1940s, with the semiconductors of the periodic table identified early on as being the most likely materials.  Copper oxide was used first, which proceeded to germanium and silicon, which is still in wide use today.  The key stages that are use in the fabrication of integrated circuits using these materials are imaging, deposition, and etching.<span id="more-62"></span></p>
<p>Computer chips are made from a number of overlapping layers, each of which is normally a different colour.  Layer masks and diffusion layers are also often used, with components constructed from a specific combination of these layers depending on their architecture.  Circuit boards share many similarities with integrated circuits, which are in many ways more tightly controlled and smaller versions of similar mechanisms.  The circuit board industry developed party due to the availability of photo chemical etching, a process that is still in use today in a number of industry sectors.  The fabrication of integrated circuits also uses a number of process that are very similar to these photo techniques, with layers of material fabricated much like a photographic process.</p>
<p>During the fabrication process, high frequency ultraviolet photons are used to create the patterns for each layer.  While computer chips are common in the 21st century, the processes used in their fabrication are highly complex and expensive.  The original methods of photo chemical etching that gave birth to the circuit board industry were influential in the development of integrated circuits, which use a number of fabrication techniques that build from basic photo etching and use advanced processes such as copper interconnects, Low K dielectric insulators, and strained silicon.</p>

Aviation refers to the use, operation, production, development, and design of aircraft, in commercial, general, and military applications. While the term aviation can refer to the use of all different kinds of aircraft, its general usage refers to heavier-than-air aircraft. From the computer systems used in aircraft design and manufacture through to the navigational systems involved in aircraft and airport operation, technology is integral to modern aviation.</p>
<p><span id="more-41"></span>The aviation sector can be divided into three distinct fields; general aviation, commercial aviation, and military aviation. Every stage of aircraft design, manufacture, and operation is tied up with technology on some level, and the modern aviation industry would not exist as we know it today without the advances provided by computers and digital technology. One of the most obvious uses of technology in aviation is in air traffic control (ATC), where computers and humans interact to keep the skies safe for us all. Other technologies are involved in aircraft storage, such as the CAD programs used to design prefabricated garages (<a href="http://www.ibk-villingen.de/bautechnik.html" target="_blank">Betonfertiggaragen</a>)  and aircraft hangers.</p>

The design of modern commercial and advanced military aircraft in particular, would not be possible without technology, including computer aided design (CAD), computer aided engineering (CAE), and finite element analysis (FEA). The manufacturing stage of aircraft is equally dependent on technology, with digital tools used in practically every aspect of development, control, and testing. Solar power is likely to become more readily available all over the world, and solar collectors will hopefully work together with photovoltaic panels to provide sustainable energy solutions for us all.</p>
